Angus Cloud, ‘Euphoria’ Star, Dies at 25

Another tragic death, “possible overdose” according to the article, more people pointing toward the idea of attending to mental health.  But that’s not really the issue, is it?

The great misunderstanding about the role of mental health in circumstances such as these, and admittedly we know little in the way of facts here, is that struggles with mental health become the pigeonhole into which we comfortably place the understanding of what happened to Angus Cloud and others like him.  He had just returned from burying his dad the previous week and struggled with grief according to the article.

So, when it comes to mental health, at least in this case it seems more appropriate to focus on “emotional health” instead.  Angus probably didn’t die from what he was thinking, but rather choices he made because of how he was feeling about what thoughts he was having.

We need to switch the conversation from mental to emotional health.  Less understood for sure, but impactful nonetheless, the idea of emotional health and how to support it, treat it, and achieve it is the direction that gives us a chance to live lives more rooted in well being and overall health.  In the absence of good emotional health, people will reach for any strategy, healthy or unhealthy, to change the emotional pain they often find themselves in.  Time to change the paradigm.
